Rumor: Windows Phone 7 based Nokia smartphones, is this the future?

The rumored

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is steadily gaining ground with millions of equipped devices selling around the globe. Nokia has stuck to the basics with the Symbian OS until now, though it expects to break the jinx and step into a fiercer race by releasing handsets based on the Windows Phone 7 platform, so gear up for this new and possibly lethal combo. The Nokia and Microsoft partnership will broaden the Windows Phone 7 market in Europe and Asia, where we have a major chunk of Nokia users.

The rumor

This isn’t the first time we have heard of rumors of a possible partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, yet this time we have a little more surety coming in from a Russian blogger who published an article on Mobile Review suggesting of a talk between the two giants a month back. This could signify that a new line of Windows Phone 7 devices may be on the roll under the Nokia brand name. Last time such rumors emerged Nokia was very cynical and denied using any other operating system in its line of phones, this time too Nokia remains skeptical of the issue.

The known

Though the hearsay has it locked that the two giants are preparing for a collaboration, Nokia prefers to remain silent on the rumor as to if they would have the Windows Phone 7 platform integrated into their phones. There is no word from Microsoft on the same as well.

What if it’s true?

The release of Windows Phone 7 has increased Microsoft’s share in the worldwide mobile OS market, though Apple with iOS and Google with Android remain the top two names to beat. A Windows Phone 7 platform on Nokia handsets could mean a win-win situation for both brands that are steadily losing their stance in their respective markets. In the long run the combo could benefit Nokia and Microsoft, where Nokia will stand to gain from the growing popularity of the Windows Phone 7, while Microsoft will stand to gain from the market share that Nokia enjoys in the handset market.
