Robots with mixed-reality system (an avatar)

Posted By: Piyush Mehta | Oct 13 2007

U-Tsu-Shi-O-Mi is a virtual humanoid that you can reach, touch and talk to. It has a mixed reality system, a synchronized pair of a robot an avatar. You can see the avatar overlaid on the robot through an HMD (it appears as a computer-animated character when viewed through a special head-mounted display).

If you take the robot's arm the avatar follows motions. To make the robot interaction safe, the robot is controlled by a force-feedback system (force detection sensors strain gauges on the arm linkages; they detect slight deformation when force applied). The avatar motions are generated based on the actual robot motions. The robot moves according to the commands which determine its joint trajectories, changing the planned motions when you touch.

These innovations are further helping me prove my point that I mentioned in my earlier post in relation to, Humans marrying Robots one day. Imagine yourself with these machines working beside you, far more advanced, sentimental, emotional and loving. It is bound to attract you provided given a real look. Video after the jump.
