Robots to recognize your facial expressions

Posted By: Jaiyant Cavale | Jun 25 2008

If you had thought your face could only be read by humans and your expressions felt only by homosapiens and a few higher order animals, then you are wrong. Machines and computers can now judge what you are thinking and how they must act, according to your facial expressions. A computer science PhD student, Jacob Whitehill from UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering, is leading this project. It is based on detecting facial expressions as part of the Institute for Neural Computation. As part of this study, he converted his own face into a remote control, where in the computer could judge, based on his facial expressions, if the speed of the video had to be slowed down or increased. Combining facial expression recognition research and automated tutoring systems, this technology aims to have robot teachers recognize your expressions, so that they can repeat, clarify what they are teaching. This could be the answer to the problem of getting rid of insensitive human teachers.
