Researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have developed a new robotic submarine dubbed the Nereus, which’ll be the first to dive down a depth of 11,000 meters, when it is let lose to attain the feat at Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean. There have been robots that have scaled the depths of the ocean with different prospective and have been assisting acquatic researchers and scientist with their studies, but Nereus adds to the host of subs with its ability to function just well autonomous and when it isn’t on the right track, the operators can tame it down to their tone via a remote control.

The robotic sub has been built up with a few chemical sensors, sonar, and digital camera to complete the tasks, click pictures and mapping those seabed’s to perfection, before $5 million intelligence makes it back to the control station on board. Nereus’ main event is slated for late May or early June, but we could see a host of tests being conducted in the mean time, which the scientists from Britain, France, Russia and Japan would be closely following.
