Anti-human robots may only be a distance away, but we’ve got a robot ready that is gravely anti-drug and anti-crime. Designed to curb drug peddling, dubbed the cargo screening ferret, this is a robot that is churned to sniff through cargo containers for drugs, weapons, explosives and other illegal stuff. The first of a kind cargo screening device, this robot being developed at the University of Sheffield is also the very first to take into the standard freight containers. Stuffed to the throat with most comprehensive sensors and detectors, laced with fiber optics and high-end lasers, the ferret is all autonomous and takes to its detection routine all by itself. The working prototypes of the ferret are expected in about two years time, and then with these ultra-sensitive detectors airports and shipping docks could have better checks on what comes in and what goes out.
