In what could be called as the first commercial cloning, South Korean biotechnologists have succeeded in cloning a pitbull terrier with the help of genetic material salvaged from it’s frozen ears. The result was a quintet, genetically identical to their father. RNL Bio, which was behind the cloning, was also in the news due to the firing of a genetic engineer who attempted cloning human embryonic stem cells. RNL Bio intends to target middle-eastern customers and clone up to 300 dogs this year. Cloning a dog is more difficult than cloning cats or rats because of the unpredictable ovulation cycle. This could very well set the new stage for commercial cloning and help people to open up to the idea of cloning which can, if allowed, save lives.
