Review: Logitech Wireless Touchpad for Windows

Quite a large number of the world's population today, especially those who swear by latest technologies and innovations, own at least some sort of touch-based device. To feed this growing appetite of consumers, Logitech has found the perfect solution with its new Wireless Touchpad for Windows 7 users. The product is aimed at people who have recently taken a general dislike for the point and click inputs, which was so common with the age-old mouse and want something new to try.

What is it?

It's not too difficult to guess from the name of the product itself that it is a wireless touchpad for the Windows 7 operating system. The concept of Logitech's Touchpad is similar to that of the Magic Trackpad developed for the Mac devices from Apple. But, there are plenty of new things here.

Key Features

With a surface area of 5 inches, the touchpad is quite large and comfortable. There's enough room for your fingers to rest comfortably on it while using multi-touch gestures like the four-finger swipe. The gentle slope of the touchpad puts your hand at ease while using it.

Unlike Apple's Magic Trackpad, which works on Bluetooth technology, Logitech's touchpad works on wireless technology giving you a wider range of up to 25 meters to work on your computer. As it's based on wireless technology it further cuts down the clutter that wires create. So, you can make better use of your work space.

If you own more than one wireless product from Logitech, you would love to have the smart Unifying receiver that comes with the Touchpad. It's a small USB dongle with a frequency of 2.4GHz that can connect with five more Logitech's wireless devices at the same time saving up the USB ports for other usage.

Logitech ensures that the battery on the touchpad can last four months depending upon your usage, which is a good amount of time for a battery to last without any charges. There's also an LED indicator on the touchpad that lets you know if the device is on and also notifies you when the batteries are low on power.

There's also an added advantage to owning this particular touchpad, which is a three year long warranty.

What's Innovative

Bringing the 'touch' experience to an OS, which is clearly not touch-friendly is a remarkable fact in itself. It's a job well done by Logitech. Club that with the impressive Unifying receiver, which can connect up to five of your wireless devices at the same time and you have the perfect icing on the cake.

Price and availability

The Logitech Wireless Touchpad is available in the market. However, depending upon your preferences it can also be pre-ordered from Logitech's website itself or can also be ordered from the online retailers such as Amazon or Best Buy for a price of $49.99.

The Up-side

The ergonomically designed touchpad, excellent support for the multi-touch gestures on an OS not meant for touch technology, the Unifying receiver and the pleasant look are some of the attractive features of the device.

The Down-side

Although, the company had done quite well on most of the aspects, there are some bothering knick knacks in the software. For example, pinch to zoom, which is one of the most commonly used gestures on a touch-based device, is absent from the touchpad.

The bottom-line

If you want to experience the touch technology on your Windows OS, then there's nothing that should stop you from getting the Wireless Touchpad from Logitech. It's an excellent product. And there's a strong likelihood that it would soon upgrade the software to support additional gestures and also make it compatible with the more touch-friendly Windows 8. The minute it happens, it will be an instant hit with the Windows users.
