Review: Chameleon X-1 mouse with a full-fledged game controller in its base

A Hong Kong peripheral manufacturer, Shogun Bros has recently launched its latest gadget – the Chameleon X-1, a mouse which has a game-pad built into its underside. It has a console-style game-pad and plays the role of three things at a time – a mouse, a game-pad and a remote control. In fact, this mouse is one of the best ways through which one can input into a computer.

What is it?

On looking at it for the first time, it doesn’t at all appear to be something functioning more than a mouse, but when one has a look at its base, one can easily understand the significance of the 14 buttons located there which make it a complete game-pad. With the help of the IR sensor, you can turn it into a remote control and by pressing different buttons you can switch between functions.

What’s innovative?

The gadget employs seven buttons in addition to the scroll wheel when it comes to be used as a mouse; transmits radio frequency to 2.4 GHz and also has an in-built optical sensor developed by Pixart controlled by a maximum of 1600dpi to 125Hz. This gadget gives us the feel that a powerful micro-computer unit is skilfully built-up inside the mouse. The surface of the mouse has undergone vacuum electroplating for a very smooth surface which is also corrosion-free.

Price and availability

As regards the availability, the Chameleon X-1 has been priced at $55 and will be available first in the United States during the first half of 2011.

The up side

The Chameleon X-1 is a device which has the ability to turn-up to be your best gaming companion. It connects to a Windows PC through a USB dongle supporting 2.4GHz wireless. The gadget preserves all the tracking data and the best quality of lens is embedded into this mouse.

The down side

Although this device is especially for high-end gamers, while using it one should keep in mind that by simply using the buttons underneath the gadget may result in unwanted clicks on the mouse functioning on the top side.
