Nursing a patient in hospitals and at home becomes a very daunting task even for the dedicated nurses at times. Thus, in order to relieve humans of this task, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a robot that gives sponge baths to patients. Dubbed Cody the robot could fit in as a replacement for our nurses in the near future, but are those horny patients in for the transition?
Based on Segway omnidirectional mobile base, Cody has two anthropomorphic arms offering seven degrees of freedom and the wrists offering 6-axis force/torque sensors. “The end of the robot's right arm is fitted with a specialized 'bath mitt' and the robot gathers laser range data and images from a laser range finder and camera mounted above the robot's torso."
