Researchers at the University of Design in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany have devised a “Tangible Table” based interface that employs a series of pucks to handle all of the controls.

‘Our goal was to build a working prototype of a tangible table-based user interface. In contrast to a simulation, this environment facilitates the evaluation and testing of user interactions. The principles of interaction and graphical behavior had higher priority.’

A camera mounted underside the table tracks the motion of the pucks and display the image on the table surface using combination mirrors, infrared lights, and a projector. Though the motive was not so futuristic, I suppose the device could be used effectively for some cool applications.
