Deep Blue Sea is still a mystery for humans despite the technological advancements. But if the Oceanographer Johan Delaney of University of Washington has his way things might change.
He plans to build about 10 semiautomated geobiological labs across the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate off Washington, 8,000 feet under water. Each of these labs will have an array of cameras, lights, robots and sensors which will be powered by a single cable which will supply up to 100 kW of power.
The data will be transferred by an optical fiber and the gadgets will record everything from biomass of microbes to the effects of ocean temperatures on weather.
The researchers of British Columbia University of Victoria are scheduled to begin building their 500-miles segment in 2007 and US researchers are also hoping for a grant of $ 150 million to fund their 900 miles segment.
