Philips, Samsung Electronics, Sony Corp. and Panasonic or better known as the Radio Frequency for Consumer Electronics consortium, are all getting together to bring you better remote controls. They are hoping to achieve a joint platform on which everything will be based. The standard for the radio technology will be IEEE 802.15.4. MAC/PHY radio technology spec in the 2.4-GHz unlicensed frequency band. With this technology, it will allow omnidirectional and reliable two-way wireless communication along with frequency agility that would allow advanced remotes to co-exist with other 2.4-GHz wireless technologies.
Bas Driesen, consortium chairman, had this to say,
This platform will open up the possibilities for much richer remote control functionality in the future
Well this is good considering we bought a new LCD TV last week end and the signal on my remote isn’t reaching my receiver. So every time I want to change a channel I’d have to get up and walk into the other room, which is senseless when I shouldn’t have to do that. Now, hopefully, with this technology I might have a better pick up for my remote and not having to get up, I can be all lazy.
I believe this may be ushering in a new age of remotes and TVs. Everything just got more powerful. With the bigger and better TVs, remotes have to get better as well or be left in the dust.
