Readot transforms 2D content into tactile 3D information for blind

In an attempt to create more interesting concepts for the visually impaired, designers Lim Hyoseon, Kim Seungmo and Kim Suhyun have come up with an award winning device called the Readot. This 2009 Red Dot Award winner is a concept done to facilitate the visually impaired with the help of series of pins raised and lowered to transform text or two-dimensional images into tactile three-dimensional output. Based on the Munsell Color System, the grid of pins responds to digital information that can be felt by touching. Besides feeling the content, the blind would also be able to use the Readot to save and print the information (using a PC). Using the built-in microphone and speakers the users can also save pictures through voice recognition. It seems to be a worthy concept, let’s see how far the designers can go with it.
