Quick tip: Six unique ways to boost your cellphone reception

What was once a luxury is today a necessity! Yes, cellphones today can be classified as an absolute necessity. Once used only for making and receiving calls, today constitutes a medium for all possible modes of communication. So much so that cellphones not working or providing erratic signal reception is a matter of great concern. Dropped calls, echoes, static, etc are some of the interferences which are enough to drive someone crazy when occurring on a regular basis. Some tips to minimize these are:

Use a cellular repeater

Cellphone repeaters are known to pick up low cellular signals and broadcast them after boosting the imput over the coverage area where installed. Typically needing at least 2 signal bars, it significantly improves reception in addition to download speeds and battery life.

Upgrade your antennae

Certain cellphone manufacturers are known to make “hi-gain” antennas which can be tweaked by the end-user. Though not very effective at improving signal strength, these antennas have the only positive that the user doesn’t stay confined to one particular location. Being relatively inexpensive trying them doesn’t burn a hole in the pocket either.

Try Wi-Fi for mobile phone signal

Another trick that can be used for mobile phones with UMA support is using wi-fi facility when GSM signals are weak or poor. However, only some Blackberry, Androids and a few selective models have this specialized feature.

Use Amplifiers

Another tip that invites special mention is using amplifiers. Though capable of increasing cellular reception to the tune of an extended coverage of about 50 miles, amplifiers basically come with the biggest drawback of needing power from an electrical outlet. The power source if wired to the amplifier provides better reception only when directly connected, thus impairing mobility. However, wireless amplifiers are also available which do not necessarily need a direct connection but which do need an intelligent combo of internal and external cellphone antennas.

Use external antennae

A tip with the highest probability of boosting cellular reception is using external antennae. However, this method is expensive as one also needs to purchase an adapter kit for syncing the phone with the antennae.

Change network

If all tips fail, the best option would be - switch your service provider. Considering that operators have their own unique frequencies, there is a good chance that switching over to a new frequency would deliver results positively.
