Yes, American researchers from Carnegie Mellon University have developed a machine that is capable of reading our minds. A sophisticated scanner and a computer program were used to screen the working of the brain. An advanced form of MRI Scanner showed how the brain reacted to ten drawings of tools and buildings. The computer was programmed to predict whether a person was thinking about a tool or a building and they had an astonishing 97% accuracy in the predictions.

The brain scans showed different regions involved in processing the information and different areas lit up with different thoughts. Though the thoughts were limited to just ten pictures, they hope to come up with a program which can predict words and eventually entire sentences.

The positive side of such a device is that it could be used to track the way a criminal thinks or may help predict thoughts of people with neurological disorders making it easy for the physicians who treat them. Of course, the negative side would be the intrusion of the much guarded privacy.
