By next year, you could be able to lay your hands on the new blue-violet semiconductor laser diode that would be able to burn a dual-layer Blu-ray or HD DVD disc at speeds ten times the normal.
Nichia Corp. claims their upcoming laser diode to emanate pulsed light at 320mW while stably operating for 1,000 hours. The diode when used with four-layer disc will allow 2X speed recording while enabling 10X speed recording with a double-layer disc.
The company anticipates putting the product into mass production in the first half of 2008. It would be interesting to know of the diode’s performance with the ten-layered discs.
