Although it had all the makings of a good technological innovation, Polymer Vision’s Readius went kaput when the company folded. It demonstrated a radically different approach from those bulky handheld devices with large screens. The Readius had a 5 inches screen in a device not much bigger than a standard mobile phone. Polymer Vision used a TFT controlled Electronic Ink technology for it to create a monochrome display that was quite flexible. It was a very clever device, but the Readius story lived rather too short as the main investors in Philips spin-off Polymer Vision were caught up in a Ponzi scheme.

However, that 2008 story is back now with quite a gut feel. The firm’s rollable, pocket-friendly cell-book came out again to be greeted by the market after a gap of two years when Wistron bought Polymer Vision out of bankruptcy and its project was funded. The company, with its all new looking product, claimed that the new device would embrace the folding display technology but apply it to a phone with a color screen. Everything else, the product’s operating system and its features are secret till now. We know the new edition is full color unlike the passive monochrome display of its predecessor, but the final design of this device can be out later this year.
