CES 2009 was adorned in the green theme of things. Manufacturers took upon themselves to reveal whatever they could under the green tag. LEDs and AMOLEDs ruled all the while, as flexible displays and illumination LED-enabled gadgets lighted Vegas over the longish weekend. Yet, there is scope for more efficiency – a statement that has been proved affirmative with the demonstration of more proficient and largely efficient light emitting diodes developed by the researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The institute has developed the new polarization-matched LEDs, which are 18% brighter in output and about 22% more efficient than conventional LEDs, in collaboration with Samsung. The LEDs, when fed in with higher currents, crank down and emit less power. This new device, however, achieves reduction in “efficiency droop,” by adorning the new polarization-matched layers.
