
Did you think the double-layered Blu-ray was the ultimate storage one could fathom? Then you have a reason to be moved. Spotted is Pioneer’s new layered optical disc that boasts of a decisive 400GB data storage capacity. The 16-layer optical disc draws reminiscence from the good old Blu-ray discs, but Pioneer’s disc is made up in a different reflective material, as it uses a similar head to read the disc as the Blu-ray. We don’t know, given the changing trends in the storage devices, how long the optical discs will survive, but there is a possibility that Pioneer sees a bright future in the market, and that’s why the maker’s wish to build better and more powerful 1TB discs by 2013. The optical discs will be available only in read-only format until 2010, where after, rewritable discs shall also be available.
