If the 25 GB Blu-ray disc enamored the technological world with its high storage capacity, there is a lot more for the same world in store. Pioneer Corporation, Tokyo, has announced that it has developed a 16 layer read only optical disc, which can hold an astounding 400 GB of data. This could very well be the first time that a disc has been developed with a storage capacity of this scale. Earlier multi layer discs have had the problem of obtaining clear signals from each recording layer in a stable manner. This noise has been greatly reduced in the 16-layer discs. The optical specifications of the lens such as the numerical aperture are similar to BD discs, which means, they both might be compatible with each other. Pioneer will make public more information at the ISOM/ODS2008 in Hawaii, which begins July 13.
