Simple acts of kindness like aiding someone to cross the road and making contributions to charity is what runs through our mind when we think of blind people. But a technology giant like Philips has thought of making them self-reliant, rather than extending a helping hand. The geeks at Philips have come up with a concept of Smart Specs that can provide audio signals, thus helping them to know what lies around them. The image pulled up by their official website does seem to be greek at this point, but we can hope an explanation of the same will be put once the project reaches the next level. A camera coupled with accelerometers that detect movement will be stashed inside. Obstacles in the way will be detected with the help of a computer which will also segregate the moving objects from the non-moving ones. So, the visually impaired will not bump onto object in their way and hurt themselves when they wouldn’t have their well-wishers around. We’re definitely looking forward to the day when this project sees the light of a working model and eventually an actual unit put up for sale.
