Penn State professor develops healing bio-absorbable bandage

Removing cotton gauge bandage from over a covered wound is a daunting task. Most of us have experience the excruciating pain that’s inflicted when the bandage is separated from the skin. Often the process leaves the healing wound torn open which in case of chronic wounds can be pretty dangerous. To address the concerns brought upon by traditional bandages, Jeffrey Catchmark, associate professor at Penn State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences has developed a bio-dissolvable bandage material made from microbial cellulose.

Called the Catchmark, this bio-absorbable bandage is made particularly for the chronic wound, but that doesn’t mean the bandage that heals wounds and degrades over time cannot be used on other wounds. The bandage slowly besides healing the wound degrades into glucose, which becomes part of the sugar in the blood and then along. So, there are no side effects of this dissolvable bandage.
