We know that Apple would be working on a head-mounted glasses-style display for audio and video feedback from the iPod, iPhone and probably the iPad now. Now, to complement this or maybe for a different purpose altogether, Apple has also filed a patent application for a gaming controller that’ll function as a dock for touchscreen devices (and don’t we know which ones they are talking off).

The patent app is for a device that’ll have game specific controls that would include, buttons, joysticks, directional pads, microphones, cameras, secondary display and like the patented head-mounted display – some motion detection. The game control device that we are talking of could be very similar to the third-party devices like the iControlPad that we’ve seen, but this controller, no matter how far stretched the idea may seem now, would be one built by Apple. And to make sure on legit Apple devices are being used with it, the patented device could have an authentication chip stuffed in.
Now this seems a solid step towards that mark of slicing up the portable game market that Apple often talks off.
