Transistors being so in demand, Portuguese researchers have developed transistors with a paper interstrate layer. This is the first time a Field Effect Transistor (FET) has been created using paper. These offer the same level of performance as any state-of-the-art Thin Film Transistor (TFT) would do. An increased interest in biopolymers for low cost electronic applications may have encouraged the Portuguese researchers to develop a transistor using paper as the physical support. The team fabricated the device on both sides of the paper and thus paper acted as the electrical insulator and as a substrate as well. In fact these paper based transistors out performed semi conductor based transistors. They can be used in the manufacture of electronic devices, paper displays, smart labels, RFID tags etc. However, much is not known about the actual research, as the paper would be made available only after two months in September.
