Opto-Isolater lets artworks know how we look at them

I have to admit I’m not a real big fan of role-reversals. And when a creepy new art project claims to have the 'gazer' become the 'gazee' I don’t know what I wanna think about it. In an extremely subversive and incredibly ambitious new project designers Golan Levin and Greg Baltus of Standard Robot Company, Pittsburgh, have made it possible for the artworks to judge how we looked at them! The Opto-Isolater, as the thing is called, is developed with support from Creative Capital and the Berkman Faculty Development Fund. I’m a little foggy on how it works exactly but I can tell you that it records feedback by looking the viewer directly in the eye, appearing to study its viewer’s face intently, blinking a second after the spectator blinks, and when you stare at it too long, it coyly looks away! Gosh! What a nightmarish thought! You know if I wanted to torture myself by being stared at, I’d wear a 90’s theme outfit and take a walk through the local high school!
