OmniTread snakebot designed for rescue operations [W/Video]

We’ve seen all kinds of robots, while most makers are trying to give their creations a human feel and form, engineering students at the University of Michigan have developed a rather unique robot, that’s shaped like a snake. Their OmniTread serpentine robot consists of seven segments connected by pneumatic bellows. It has been specifically designed to maneuver in extremely difficult terrain, small holes, climb over high obstacles and/or even to glide through the rubble of a collapsed building. The creators have no production plans for the crawling bot yet, but if it can do what the makers claim, we may soon see the snakebot inducted into rescue teams around the world.
