Okeanos to revolutionize deep-sea exploration
Okeanos Explorer is a dream machine for deep-sea explorers trying to unstitch the underwater secrets embroidered by the unknown in the 95% of the still unexplored ocean floor. Carved out of a Cold War-era naval vessel, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Okeanos is embellished with state-of-the-art technology to meet the needs of the researchers who can stay there for more than 250 days.

The ship will start its maiden voyage in 2007 armed with two unmanned robot submersibles packed with high-definition cameras and other scientific equipments and capable of diving up to 6,000 meters and an avant-garde telepresence system that'll send information and data through satellite to a $14-million mission control station, known as the Inner Space Center, started by Ballard at the University of Rhode Island.
