Netbooks are simple, cost-effective, and boring due to their limited processing capabilities. The “boring” part is about to become a thing of the past with the coming of Nvidia’s Ion. Netbooks can do a lot of stuff, but when it comes to activities that require machine performance, they fail to score. Even trying to watch YouTube videos can be a trouble. Nvidia is about to change all that with a new platform called Ion.
Ion will be a CPU-GPU combo that will combine the Intel Atom with Nvidia’s GeForce 9400M to take netbooks high on performance, low on heat generation, and still manage to keep battery consumption at present levels. The new platform will of course cost a bit more than the present system, but that may not be a consideration for most buyers.
