We are accustomed to dual-core netbooks. Smartphones and tablet PCs packed with dual core Tegra processors will soon hit the shelves sometime this year. To give a further boost to the processing function of the CPUs of mobile devices, Nvidia will launch quad-core chips for smartphones and tablet PCs. Earlier Nvidia had confirmed its intention to create advanced processors for mobile phones, which would offer robust computing power to the high-end devices. The latest chip from Nvidia, dubbed Tegra 3, will be unveiled by Nvidia probably in the upcoming Mobile World Congress, which will begin in Barcelona from February 14th.

The upcoming successor to Tegra 2 will be compatible with smartphones and tablet PCs. Tegra 3 will be available in two versions. The CPU created for tablet PCs will feature ARM-based Cortex A9 processors, which can generate up to 1.5GHz processor speed and Nvidia GeForce graphics processor. Despite offering powerful performance, the upcoming quad core processor will not suck a lot of battery juice.

It remains to be seen whether Tegra 3 could offer Qualcomm, Texas Instrument and Samsung processors a tough competition. Smartphone majors such as LG, HTC, Motorola and Dell have already developed smartphones equipped with Tegra 2. Perhaps they will be the first mobile phone companies to launch phones packed with the quad-core Tegra 3 processor.
