A portable nuclear power plant from Hyperion Power Generation wishes to tinker with the intelligence of the energy conscious. With wind and solar energy doing exceptionally well to cater to the growing global warming and power needs, nuclear power still gets the most wittiest to think. These nuclear power plants are the size of a hot tub but are really portable – with their claims of providing electricity, and given their portability we could soon see places without power lit in brightness.
What’s innovative:
The nuclear power plant can easily be transported by truck and buried underground, it comes in a small package just 1.5 meters across. Once underground the plant is ready to provide power. The power generated is enough for 20,000 homes and after five years of continuous use the only by-product is nuclear waste the size of a football, which can easily be recycled. The reactors need refueling about every seven to ten years, but the best part of the technology is that it can provide renewable power at just 10 cents a watt.
Watch this:
Hyperion asserts that their modules have no moving parts to wear down, and therefore they never need to be opened on site. The company is flowing with orders for the technology with 100 orders from oil and electricity industries already placed. The commercial development of mini nuclear plants will be a daunting task, as radiation caused by nuclear reactors could be a cause of concern for the areas that deploy the power plants.
