qinetiqs runway debris detection system to be installed in qatar

The aerodrome runways need to be kept clear of debris that could eventually be drawn into engines or damage aircraft systems. But then, this requires huge man power and sensitive debris detecting devices to keep an eye across each corner of a runaway, which at times may cover more than 4000 meters. And that does to seem to be feasible.

In the lines of such problems and constraints, Qinetiq has come up with ‘Tarsier’ – the runway debris detection system. It will be installed at the Doha International Airport in the State of Qatar, having the longest runaway in the world.

The system has three radars, which will keep scanning the runway area not just 24 hours a day, but also in all weathers, to locate objects that could damage airplane engines or aircraft systems.

Qinetiq and Qatar Air are currently negotiating on the potential installation of a Tarsier system. And, with the number of passengers using Doha International Airport rising dramatically, and with the plan to open New Doha International Airport with a 50 million passengers-capacity a year, a runway debris detection system-installation seems to be a viable decision.
