Time travel is an idea that has not only fascinated researchers worldwide but has also made its mark, successfully, on the celluloid. Recently, professor Amos Ori has provided a set of mathematical equations that he hope will eliminate some clauses that were till now thought to be impossible in the construction of the time machine.

The Time Machine concept

A time machine is a machine that could transport humans into the past. Previous theories of time travel remained in conjunction with Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. This theory states that among other things, the gravitational pull of planets and other celestial bodies bend time and space. Researchers hope to bend space and time so far that the time lines actually bend back on themselves to form a loop. To understand this theory, take a sheet of cloth and then drop a basketball on it. You will then see bends created in the sheet. Similar bends are caused in space-time due to the gravitational field of planets.

Ori’s Theory

Professor Ori has stated that this bending does not happen at all time, but he wants the bending to be strong enough and to take a special form where the lines of time make closed loops. Using this technique, he wants to manipulate space-time to make time travel possible.

Exotic Matter

Researchers have never eliminated the possibility of time travel, but the possibility comes with a unique set of challenges for the scientists including the need for some exotic matter, which has negative density. Till now this exotic matter has not been discovered but scientists believe that it exists but in little quantities.

Ori’s answer to Exotic Matter

Since, exotic matter is not present in quantities required to build a time machine, Ori present a set of conditions in 2004 to allow for the creation of a time loop without the need of exotic matter. He stated that the time loop can be bound in a donut shaped vacuum chamber inside which time would curve back on itself. Once this happens, a person traveling along that loop might be able to go further back in time with each lap. This loop will then be surrounded by an unidentified matter.

Ori’s latest research

Ori’s latest research eliminates the need of an unidentified matter also from the time loop. He now states that the loop can be filled with dust. Ori however, is still not too confident that the time machine will be built anytime soon. He states that during the initial conditions, a point of infinite gravitation can be formed and no one could pass this point. He still manages to state that his research will minimize that possibility since the core of the machine will be mathematically protected and the formation of a point of infinite gravitation will not occur.

More unanswered questions

Even after this outstanding work, some questions still remain to be answered. Ori states that even if the core is mathematically protected then also the overall stability of the time machine would pose serious threats to the mechanism. If the initial conditions are met to perfection (which in itself is difficult), then the time machine would work on its own without any further intervention.

There is a bleak chance that anyone living on Earth today will ever be able to see a time machine in action, however, our future generations can have that luxury to travel through time. If our future generations would have the luxury of time travel then why haven’t they come to meet us till now...?
