New power-hungry Intel Quad Core Processors coming soon

Posted By: Vikas Shekhawat | Jun 28 2006

According to the recent reports, Intel is set to launch its next-generation quad core processors in the first quarter of 2007. The power greedy four-way processors, including 'Clovertown' for DP servers and 'Kentsfield' for desktops, will suck up a massive 110 watts of power.

The Intel core architecture chips, no doubt, are powerful with respect to performance-per-watt, but power consumption factor seems unavoidable for the time being, especially when two processors merge for better performance. On the contrary, what about AMD's "4x4" technology, that integrates two dual-core processors within one system? Here too power efficiency takes a back seat. Therefore, we can conclude that the technology is still in its infancy and we will have to wait for another couple of years for the right solution.
