networked helmets sniper detection

Easily detectable snipers are very pissed and angry snipers. What’s the fun hiding in bushes for hours if a single shot can give you away? Well, snipers better get used to this trick as a new system developed by Vanderbilt University in Nashville, with funding from DARPA, is going to get their location quickly. The system has four microphones mounted on every soldier’s helmet, all of them networked using the radio frequency Zigbee system.

On the sound of a shot fired, the system gets to work tracking the source and relays its findings to the soldiers’ PDAs using Bluetooth. The good part: this system is smart enough to differentiate between sounds from a sniper rifle and other weapons like submachine guns. Another advantage comes in the form of cost; at just $1000 it is much cheaper than its competitors, and at weight nearly equal to four AA batteries, it’s also much lighter.
