NATURAL TECHNOLOGY #1: Global Positioning System

You're wrong if you think that all technological advancements are created by us. Rather the credit goes to Mother Nature for gifting us the perception to observe and morph the already present technology hidden in nature itself. One such technology is the Global Positioning System. GPS is a natural technology shared by many birds and marine organisms such as various sharks, sea turtles and eels. Animals with this natural ability find their own way during longs distance migrations using Earth's magnetic field.

Sharks are equipped with electrical reception organs known as 'ampullae of Lorenzini' that detect the Earth's magnetic fields emitted from the basaltic sea floors. Following these magnetic road maps sharks easily make their way through the wide ocean.

Sea turtles have magnetized mineral, magnetite, in the form of particles in their head, that act as a GPS guiding them to their destinations.
