Apparently, the Columbia has forced NASA to come out with more advanced heat shields made of robust material that can sustain extreme temperatures when a space shuttle re-enters Earth's atmosphere. The new high-tech materials under development will be able to imbibe temperatures three times hotter than the surface of the sun.

NASA's next move is to ready the Crew Exploration Vehicle that will take six astronauts to the moon by 2012. The CEV will travel with a whopping speed of 25,000 miles per hour upon re-entry that can easily melt it down but the space giant is hoping to conquer the challenge with its latest heat-absorbing shield. The research is been done at the NASA Ames laboratory.
