Microsoft researcher Lie Lu has developed an innovative content analysis tool that acts a bit like a smart shuffle for your MP3 players. What the tool basically does is that instead you browsing through your entire collection to find a specific track, it combs your entire music library and pre-selects ‘representative’ tracks that best embody a certain type of music based on examples you feed into the system. The application analyzes the song for tempo, featured instruments, genre, among other specs and suggests a list of similar songs. Though the technology is still in its infancy in terms of development, I for one wouldn’t mind having a gizmo sense my mood and play music in sync with it.
