DVD format war could be over with the introduction of Multi-layer formatting. The credit for this breakthrough goes to a British based media technology company called New Medium Enterprises (NME).

NME said that it has solved the problem which hindered the mass-production of Multi-layer high defination DVDs and now the companies can go in for the mass production. This means more picture details and more storage capacity per DVD.

They further claimed that this technology does not suffer from the low yield problem as the earlier produced multi-layer DVD suffered and DVDs coming off the manufacturing line need not to be discarded. The production cost of these multi-layer DVDs come to round about 9 cents, whereas for the single layer it was 6 cents.

There seems a patent war may start between NME and Warner bros. as three employees of Warner have applied patent for the application of these multi-layer DVDs a week before the announcement.

The technological breakthrough comes one week after three employees at movie studio Warner Bros. filed a patent for the application of multiple formats on a single DVD disc.

On the business front the NME said it has also created a new technology for the machines which have to read and write the disc. The present generation of DVD players can only read up to two layers but the company says by using the technology they can create 10 layers DVD which is readable.

The company is ready to license this technology to the mainstream consumer electronic companies.
