More efficient solid hydrogen fuel cells on their way

Hydrogen fuel cell technology puts another step towards commercialization with the remarkable development of this latest technique that accumulates hydrogen as a solid. Hydrogen is expected as the fuel of the century, since it is more efficient and leaves no pernicious gas and matter behind when burned.

Because of its gaseous nature, Hydrogen acquires large space, and its liquefaction at high pressure and low temperature was always a hindrance in commercial use. Because its compression is up to 700 times to atm pressure that can cause serious safety threats if used in vehicles.

South Korean scientists have succeeded in combining hydrogen into a solid with the use of titanium; this form can be stored at low pressure and relatively high temperatures. Moreover, titanium binds hydrogen without any energy input and the hydrogen can then be pulled out using relatively small amounts of energy.
