MIT’s Augmented Reality tech lets viewers see enhanced TV images on phone

Augmented Reality is developing into a new way to celebrate our days, and with MIT’s newly researched technology, called ‘Surround Vision,’ AR gets a push to combine TVs and cellphones together. The surround vision concept is an Augmented Reality TV tech which lets viewers, courtesy their phones, see more than what is actually seen on the TV screen. The technology here uses a footage taken from different angles, which can be seen as additional content on the phone’s screen when the phone is pointed towards the TV screen. The Surround Vision prototype adds a magnetometer to the phone to replace the accelerometer which isn’t sensitive enough to detect the subtle motion that comes from pointing a phone towards the television. If the system is commercialized, then we will head into an all new era of video entertainment. Supporting this Media Lab research scientist Michael Bove says: “This could be in your home next year if a network decided to do it.”
