Studying organisms at length hasn’t been an easy task for the wise-minded, but with a new kind of microscopic X-ray vision, dubbed the multi-spectral opto-acoustic tomography (MOST), detailed by researchers at the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen, biologists will now be able to optically follow the development of organs and cells with an organism.
In the testing phase, with the use of lasers and an ultrasound machine, the researchers were able to create a complex 3D image of the zebra fish and were then able to examine its structure in detail. Injecting fluorescent dye into the fish along with lasers, the researchers instead of detecting the refracted light, used the ultrasound machine to listen to the disturbance in the tissues caused by the alterations in temperature by the lasers. I think with this development we are heading into an era where PETA activists would have any issues with biologists.
