Developers at Hewlett Packard have apparently come up with a revolutionary new circuitry component called memristor (new elusive fourth element in electronic circuitry that stores information) that promises to drastically change the way our computers and cellphones use power on storage of data. The new type of memory is already being hailed as a major breakthrough in computer technology and claims to allow data to be stored in circuitry even if power is switched off. Based in the circuitry itself rather than a separate memory module, the memristor will allow PC manufacturers to save valuable space which in turn will lead to smaller and more powerful systems in the future. Though the technology is still in its infancy, its potential benefits could include unprecedented functions like no loss of data in case of power failure or battery death, longer life for a cellphone charge and even computers that power up instantly.
