Israeli storage company Mempile recently demoed its TeraDisc technology to Japanese consumer electronics manufacturers that was able to record and read over 100 virtual layers on a single DVD-size optical disc. Moreover, the technology is able to store up to one TeraByte (TB) of data.
In the process, they are using non-linear two-photon technology that allows for 3D recording of transparent virtual layers on the entire volume of the disc and the tcehnique is way different from that of blue-laser technology like Blu-ray and HD DVD.
Mempile has plans to allow the recording of 200 layers and of up to 5GB of data per layer in the near future. Unquestionable, the notion of a 1 TB optical disc is fascinating. With true WORM capabilities and bit-by-bit recording, TeraDisc technology is sure to lure the consumers.
