SO you’re satisfied with your 4GB USB drive? Well, there’s more to life than that; or at least there will be in 2009. Nanochip Inc. has claimed that it could deliver flash drives with huge capacities, up to 100GB, by 2009. And all this will be accomplished using nanotechnology.

Instead of the current process of writing data in NAND devices, the new process will use microscopic cantilevers whose will be less than 10 nanometers across. These would store data in squares just 15 square nanometers against the current 65 square nanometers. Since the new chips would have many tips, needless to say the flash drives will ultra-high density, translating into greater capacities and higher speeds.

There’s another good news from the company. It claims that higher capacities will not necessarily mean greater costs for consumers and plants making the new chips will cost a fraction of the cost of a contemporary plant.

Now who we are to refute Nanochip’c assertions? The company is supported by tech-giant Intel and has received funding for its prototypes already. 100GB chips in two years? That almost makes me wanna prolong my worthless existence to see the day!
