Maxell has announced to start shipping its first holographic storage system in the latter part of the next year.
They will be offering a removable system based on 300GB media in the beginning. The technology has been designed by InPhase Technologies, which is capable of achieving 1.6TB per disk.
In the holographic discs, data is encoded as a 3D pattern written and read by laser beam. InPhase is not the only company that promotes holographic storage. The other big runner is Japan’s Optware. The company has backing from Intel Capital and is working on a DVD-sized holographic disc which is supposed to hold more than 1TB of data with a data transfer speed of 1Gbps.
