This is one of the best developments, technology has made available in the recent past for it could save numerous lives on the battlefield. Imagine how difficult it must be for the soldiers to conquer terrains only by assessing a single map, which of course never makes them aware of the embed dangers. All this is now bound to change, cheers to the Masthead technology innovated by General Dynamics. A combination of LIDAR (Light Intensity Direction and Ranging), Thermal Imaging and X-Ray Backscatter, Masthead fuses the data to create real-time 3D images of the scanned areas, something like a building or a street.
The entire gadgetry is carried in a concealed manner through the area to be scanned. It can be carried in a land commuter or a plane and as it passes through that specific area the LIDAR scans the targeted object using infrared laser, which gives the distance measurements ultimately creating the aforesaid 3D map/image.
What makes it precisely potent is the ability of the LIDAR system to measure the dimensions of doors, windows, alleys etc with accuracy in millimetres. This obviously could even help the soldiers to identify and devise tactics to counter enemy artillery. I rue the fact that it took some while coming for otherwise so many more lives could have been saved until now.
