Manhole intelligence: Japan to equip manhole covers with RFID

Soon they'll definitely swipe away everything. This time it's the turn of the Japanese who're fixing RFID tags to manhole covers for monitoring critical underground infrastructure such as gas and sewage pipes.

Most probably KDDI, Pasco and Bitcom will be developing and deploy the chips under the so called "Intelligent Manhole System". The simple disaster management technique could easily track the status of critical subterranean components, allowing them to provide safe and quick help whenever needed.
