Magnetic fridge for energy-efficient refrigeration
Posted By: Vikas Shekhawat | Apr 24 2006
In order to check the whopping energy consumed by domestic and industrial refrigeration researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered a new material dubbed as 'fridge magnet'. This simple cobalt, manganese, silicon and germanium alloy automatically gets colder when placed in a magnetic field ultimately giving way to the production of 40 per cent more energy-efficient refrigerators.

Based on 'magnetocaloric effect' (MCE), the magnetic fridge is cheap and non-toxic and quite effective producing the desired cooling effect at room temperatures.
