Lunar eclipse from the moon: A view to kill!

Posted By: Gagandeep Sharma | Feb 20 2009

An eclipse is one of those rare events that make you want to stare at the sky without blinking (the others being alien invasions and women in hot balloons). Comparing the frequency with which the lunar eclipse occurs against the solar, you might be inclined to dismiss it is a rather drab event. Quite the contrary! As a matter of fact, as the appended video would show, a lunar eclipse is quite a sight (or in this case a lack of it) to behold. In a video shot by the Japanese lunar explorer KAGUYA (also called SELENE) one gets to see what a lunar eclipse looks like from the moon – a behind the scenes as it were. The much coveted “diamond ring” is also seen in all its glory; although you might have seen better ones during a solar eclipse. Either way the view is just great. Astronomer or not, just sit back and enjoy this small clip, courtesy the Japanese tech. And by the bye, this capture of the earth’s diamond ring is being touted as the first-ever by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). So all hail the Japanese.
