We aren’t very sure if we have come across giant-sized “breathing” noses, but are certainly curious to know how the Lumbering Contraption powers some weird devices that in turn drive a nose-picking machine. Basically a monstrously big 10×10-foot hamster ball, the Lumbering Contraption is an entry at the Handcar Regatta competition.
What’s Innovative: It isn’t every day that you come across metal hamster balls that can make you puke after a few rolls. And weird still is the fact that the end purpose of this giant hollow sphere is to pick noses.
Watch This: We are yet to come to terms with what we feel about this giant-sized contraption. Yet, we believe it stands a good chance at the Handcar Regatta.
Designer: Although we haven’t seen all of their works, the team at “Almost Scientific” has certainly impressed us with their Lumbering Contraption.

The Make magazine blog post was confusing in that it seemed to equate The Lumbering Contraption with the Nose Picker. They are completely separate projects by different crews. The only noses we pick are our own.
Hey all
If I may, let me just set the record straight.
The Lumbering Contraption does NOT pick noses. It never did and never will. The Disgusting Spectacle was a nose-picking device built by another group of makers a few years ago that incorporated a large-scale hamster type wheel.
This particular ”Hot-Rod Hamster Wheel of Death” is being built by The Tree House Crew... www.steamtreehouse.com at Louise Street Labs in Oakland, of whom Alan Rorie of Almost Scientific is a member.
It was designed in a drunken artistic frenzy at a seedy bar in the Mission, SF... on a beer stained napkin... mocked up with cardboard... scaled up with aluminum and finally put into Solidworks
We’re building it for the ”The Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta and Exposition of Mechanical and Artistic Wonders!” http://handcar-regatta.com/
Thanks

I had the pleasure of working on both The Disgusting Spectacle, and the Lumbering Contraption. The Disgusting Spectacle was the brainchild of artists Tracy Feldstein and Don Bruce. It was built in 2005 in Oakland CA. More info on that project can be found here:http://laughingsquid.com/the-disgusting-spectacle/
Thanks Sean and Christopher.. I guess the article at the source was indeed misleading. Apologies for the goof-up.
